FinOps for Kubernetes: Node Autoscaling, Spot Instances & Cost Allocation

Strategies for controlling Kubernetes spend in AWS EKS and Azure AKS: cluster autoscaler tuning, Spot instance interruption handling, and Kubecost allocation.

1. The Multi-Tenant Kubernetes Cost Challenge

Kubernetes abstracts physical and virtual server infrastructure into unified compute pools. While this enhances deployment velocity, it frequently obscures workload-level cost attribution. Without granular FinOps tooling, engineering leaders cannot determine which microservice or engineering squad is driving cloud invoice growth.

In standard Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) clusters, idle overprovisioning typically wastes between 30% and 45% of allocated vCPU and memory capacity.

2. Right-Sizing Container Requests and Limits

The primary driver of Kubernetes overprovisioning is excessive container `requests` specifications. When an engineer specifies:

```yaml resources: requests: cpu: "2000m" memory: "4Gi" limits: cpu: "4000m" memory: "8Gi" ```
The Kubernetes scheduler reserves the full 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM on the host node, regardless of whether the pod actually consumes those resources during average traffic.
Solution: Vertical Pod Autoscaler (VPA) in Recommendation Mode
Deploying VPA in `Off` mode allows it to collect 14-day rolling historical utilization metrics and recommend realistic P95 request thresholds, allowing cluster density to increase by 2x to 3x without risk of Out-Of-Memory (OOM) pod evictions.
3. Spot Instance Orchestration with Karpenter
For stateless web APIs, worker queues, and batch processing workloads, cloud Spot instances provide discounts between 60% and 80% compared to standard on-demand pricing.
Modern clusters should deprecate the legacy Kubernetes Cluster Autoscaler in favor of **Karpenter** (on AWS) or **KEDA + AKS Spot Node Pools**. Karpenter launches compute instances directly in response to unschedulable pod requirements within 40 seconds, dynamically selecting optimal instance types across diverse hardware families to minimize preemption risk.
4. Namespace and Label Cost Allocation
To implement transparent chargebacks and showbacks across product divisions: 1. Mandate standardized labels across all deployment manifests: `cost-center`, `environment`, `service-owner`. 2. Deploy OpenCost or Kubecost to map container CPU/memory usage directly to real hourly cloud provider billing APIs. 3. Integrate monthly cost delta reports directly into CI/CD pull request workflows.
